He is two years old and this has never happened before. The rest of his hair is growing at a normal rate, but it looks like he was shaved in a few patches on his back. What would cause my labradoodle to not grow hair in patches on his back?
Vet visit might be best option.
From the way you stated your question I'm assuming your dog was shaved down or clipped short? Often for labs or labs mixes when they are shaved or clipped short it interferes with the natural growth of their coat. Their type of coat isn't meant to be shaved or clipped %26amp; will have odd growth patterns when growing back. Go to vet to be certain your dog doesn't have any other medical issues going on.What would cause my labradoodle to not grow hair in patches on his back?
I think it's cause he is a mixed breed ( Labrador x Poodle ) no thought was put into the breeding.. no health testing and when unethical people like this breed mutts for profit.. you end up with dogs that have issues.. You are lucky, this is the least of the problems you could have with such a mix.

Hard to tell.
I would have advised you to ask the breeder, but considering that a good breeder wouldn't intentionally make more mixes... I'll assume that he/she didn't bother doing any other things a good breeder would do either, such as health tests.
He needs to be checked for a fungus. That will cause hair loss. Thyroid issues can also cause hair loss, but that is more common in older dogs not young ones like yours. Your vet can check for a fungal infection.
he might have scabies or mange... look it a store for some medicine, it probably is one of the above if he scratches. or talk to a vet...
